The category into which a network falls is determined by its size / scale

Few more terms are derived by internet users like BAN(Body Area Network), PAN(Personal Area Network), CAN(Campus Area Network), SAN(Storage Area Network) etc.

LAN Local Area Network

LAN is privately owned network that operates in very small geographical area (10 m to a few km) widely used to connect personal computers and workstations in offices and factories to share hardware (like printers, scanners) and software (application software) and exchange information.

LANs are distinguished from other kinds of networks by three characteristics:

 (1) Size: restricted by number of users licensed to access the operating system or application software

(2) Transmission technology: LAN consists of single type of cable and all the computers/ communicating devices connected to it. Most local-area networks use a 48-bit physical address.

(3) Topology.

Metropolitan Area Network

A metropolitan area network, or MAN, covers a city.

It is designed for customers who need a high-speed connectivity, normally to the Internet, and have endpoints spread over a city or part of city.

Evolution of MAN

Earlier they were locally-designed, adhoc systems. The companies began jumping into the business, getting contracts from city governments to wire up an entire city.

The next step was television programming and even entire channels designed for cable only. From its inception till late 90s, MAN  it was intended for television reception only.

When the Internet attracted a mass audience, the cable TV network operators began to realize that with some changes to the system, they could provide Internet service in unused parts of the spectrum.

At that point cable TV network converted to MAN

Wide Area Network

A wide area network, or WAN, coves a large geographical area often a country or continent or even whole world.

The customers or hosts are connected by a subnet. The subnets are typically owned and operated by internet service provider or Telephone Company.
