Tree Topology

Tree or Hierarchical Topology

A tree topology combines the characteristics of bus and star topology. In Tree topology, group of star networks are connected to the bus backbone. Tree topology is also called as hierarchical structure. Tree networks thus may have branches that contain multiple devices connected point-to-point. Signal from transmitting device first reaches the hub to which it is connected. Hub then directs this signal to tree bus which then travels along the entire network. Twisted pair cable is commonly used in star structures and coaxial / optical fiber as backbone by tree topology.   Tree  topology  is  frequently used to organize the computers in a corporate network

Advantages of using tree topology

  1. Point-to-point wiring for each device.
  2. Easy to detect a faulty device.
  3. Easy to expand a network.
  4. Scalable as leaf nodes can accommodate more nodes in the hierarchical chain.

Disadvantages of tree topology

  1. Large amount of cabling is needed.
  2. A lot of maintenance is needed.
  3. More difficult to configure as compared to other topologies.
  4. More expensive than other topologies.
  5. Overall length of each segment is limited by the type of cabling used.
  6. Fault in the backbone affects the entire network.
